Disorder-induced mode coupling and symmetry breaking in amorphous solids

چکیده
Abstract Applying very small purely radial strains on amorphous solids in geometry one observes elastic responses that break the symmetry. Without any plasticity involved, indicate mode coupling contributions even for minute strains. We show these symmetry-breaking are due to disorder, typical configurations. The quantitatively explained using classical Michell solutions which excited by coupling.

Yield stress in amorphous solids: a mode-coupling-theory analysis.
The yield stress is a defining feature of amorphous materials which is difficult to analyze theoretically, because it stems from the strongly nonlinear response of an arrested solid to an applied deformation. Mode-coupling theory predicts the flow curves of materials undergoing a glass transition and thus offers predictions for the yield stress of amorphous solids. We use this approach to analy...
متن کاملExchange-coupling-induced symmetry breaking in topological insulators.
An exchange gap in the Dirac surface states of a topological insulator (TI) is necessary for observing the predicted unique features such as the topological magnetoelectric effect as well as to confine Majorana fermions. We experimentally demonstrate proximity-induced ferromagnetism in a TI, combining a ferromagnetic insulator EuS layer with Bi(2)Se(3), without introducing defects. By magnetic ...
متن کاملStrong Coupling Electroweak Symmetry Breaking
We review models of electroweak symmetry breaking due to new strong interactions at the TeV energy scale and discuss the prospects for their experimental tests. We emphasize the direct observation of the new interactions through high-energy scattering of vector bosons. We also discuss indirect probes of the new interactions and exotic particles predicted by specific theoretical models. Strong C...
متن کاملSymmetry breaking and low energy conformational fluctuations in amorphous graphene
Recently, the prospects for amorphous phases of graphene (a-g) have been explored computationally. Initial models were flat, and contained odd-member rings, while maintaining threefold coordination and sp bonding. Upon relaxation, puckering occurs, and may be traced to the existence of pentagons, in analogy with the situation for fullerenes. In this work, we systematically explore the inherent ...
متن کاملDisorder-assisted melting and the glass transition in amorphous solids.
The mechanical response of solids depends on temperature, because the way atoms and molecules respond collectively to deformation is affected at various levels by thermal motion. This is a fundamental problem of solid state science and plays a crucial role in materials science. In glasses, the vanishing of shear rigidity upon increasing temperature is the reverse process of the glass transition...
